We Need Girlfriends is a DIY filmmakers' dream; a web series created by three aspiring New York-based creatives that lead to a major development deal and a network pilot.
Angel Acevedo, Brian Amyot, and Steven Tsapelas, through their Rag Tag Productions outfit, launched the 11x5mins series in 2006 and watched it become a huge hit across the Internet, powered by YouTube and MySpace.
The show follows three young men, loosely based on the trio themselves, who find themselves pining for female companionship in New York City.
Tsapelas says: "We moved in together and we found ourselves dumped and single and clueless. We were watching Entourage and we were the anti-Entourage, standing in the corner of the bar on our own."
The show attracted a significant online audience; the fourth episode has been viewed on YouTube over 728,000 times. Sex in the City creator Darren Star was a fan of the series and contacted the trio and studio Sony Pictures Television also became involved, offering Rag Tag a development deal in September. They then pitched the show to a number of US networks in October, closing a deal to produce a pilot, helmed by Star, with CBS.
"When we started doing it online we didn't have aspirations for the TV, but we hoped that something good would come of it," says Amyot. Rag Tag Productions is now in the process of developing other series, some specifically for the Internet and some primarily for television.
